Rusteberg
The castle hill of Rusteberg is situated close to the village of Marth, near Uder and Heilgenstadt in Thüringen. The high hill was used as a fortification already before the Middle Ages. The castle was built around 1100, when Rusteberg and Heiligenstadt belonged to the bishop of Mainz. This was where the oldest ancestors of the von Knorring family were castle wardens in the 12th century.
The impressive hill is still visible from far around, but completely over-grown with trees, and the ruins of the chapel are all that remain of the castle itself. The stones were used in the 18th century to build a new mansion, the present Rusteberg clinic in Marth, below the hill.
